Goods Lost in Transit by Initial City Link, TNT and UPS – Good reasons to send your valuables to & from Spain with FedEx!

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

Today is a holiday in Spain and I’m meant to be doing accounts work.  But I can’t help looking at what the competition is doing and, blow me over, I´ve found a corker of a website!

http://www.goodreason.co.uk/department/tnt-lost-parcels-packages/ .

If you don´t want to read the whole thing, here is a summary.  This website sells goods “lost” in Transit by Initial City Link, TNT and UPS.  When these companies later “find” your package they auction off the contents.  Unbelievably, in the case of TNT, some of these parcels contain the information about the original owner!

The site goes on to say that if you accept compensation from the courier company the goods belong legally to that courier company and it has every right to sell them.

“The Dilithium Networks Analyzer for example had Dilithium Networks badges on it. All UPS had to do was look the customer on their database. UPS gave £25 GBP to Dilithium Networks who valued the item at £12,000 GBP at the time. We have all the details.

Also, the problem with auction houses is knowing that if UPS lost your parcel, it could end up in the public domain and it may include sensitive information too.”

This company buys “lost” courier parcels at auction and then sells them on.  The above analyser is on sale for  £4,000.  Their current stock includes parts for an attack submarine for sale at a bargain £10,000 + VAT!

No wonder Citibox uses FedEx Express for virtually all its international deliveries.  If you want to use FedEx too, and save money, you had better come through Citibox.

How the Puente affects the Spanish Courier Services

Monday, October 11th, 2010

Spain is the party country.  Although, amazingly, there are not that many more public holidays in Spain than in the UK, what is so disruptive is:

Fiestas disrupt Spain's Courier Services

Typical Spanish Fiesta Participents

a)  Different regions and towns have different holidays so you never quite know when Marbella is feasting its local saint (or patrona).

b)  The Puente.  A puente is a bridge.  If a public holiday is on a Tuesday or Thursday, a huge number of people in Spain take the Monday or Friday as leave (or sick-leave).  If the public holiday is on a Wednesday it becomes a “Puente largo” or Long bridge and results in two days one one side or another being taken off work.

The result is to put Spain on slow boil while the holiday (and subsequent hangover day) is taken away from the normal working week.  This means that someone who was going to send something urgent last Friday but didn’t quite make it will now have to wait until next Wednesday when they are next in the office.

It is not FedEx that take the Puente, they work a normal schedule, but the other inefficient couriers who have franchise systems and, to be fair, the customers themselves.  I am thrilled to say that no Citibox office took a puente!

With FedEx Economy that makes a whole week difference in arrival date (because FedEx parcels travel over the weekend).

Welcome to Citibox Spain

mega millions

Welcome to Citibox. This is the place to find out about everything regarding the sending and receiving of mail and packages throughout Europe. We will regularly update this page with snippets of information regarding the sending and receiving of mail and offer advice on the best ways to go about it all.

We will also have regular updates of the latest locations to offer the Citibox facilities throughout Spain and beyond.

Communications Solved
More and more of us are buying our shopping from internet sites because these often offer better choice, better value, or more familiar products, than are available in local shops. eBay, Amazon, and a host of others make 1 click shopping easy …. except when it comes to delivery. Courier companies cannot deliver to Spanish PO Boxes (apartados de correos). If you are lucky enough to have an address they will deliver to, they expect you to stay in all day to receive your parcel. Even if your purchase is coming by post (and many companies will not post outside the UK) you may make any number of unnecessary visits to your local post office before your parcel actually turns up. Virtually everyone in Spain has a horror story of something that did not arrive on time or did not arrive at all.

National and International Shipments of any size
There are a number of international transport companies in Spain but very few offer next day service. How can a normal person be expected to understand the different rates quoted by different companies for different delivery times? What about insurance? What about reliability? What about accountability? Citibox specialise in national and international secure deliveries and we are here to help you find the right value combination of price and speed that suits you for every shipment, from sending a document to delivering your purchases through to moving your entire household contents. Citibox will organise your urgent worldwide collections and deliveries through FedEx, its affiliated partner company, for time-definite, door-to-door, customs-cleared express delivery service for documents and parcels to over 214 countries worldwide. Can you really afford to rely on the post when thousands of letters go missing every day? Just come in and see us and we’ll run through your options in plain language.

Secure Mailbox and Accommodation Address
Some companies, governmental and financial institutions will not accept a post office box as an address and want a physical location. Citibox provides a physical location where your post and parcels can be delivered with absolute security and privacy. You won’t find the restricted opening times of most Spanish post offices, nor will you queue behind an endless line of people passing the time of day while they are offered advice on completing complex forms

Postal Forwarding and Redelivery Services
Many people have been away from their properties for an extended period and returned to find their water, electricity, telephone etc. disconnected because of an unpaid bill. Citibox can forward mail to you when you are away or even look out for specific items and notify you of their arrival.

On-line Tracking of Parcels and SMS Delivery Notification
All packets and parcels sent or collected by Citibox on your behalf can be tracked over the internet. If you don’t have the ability to track them yourself, ask us and we’ll let you know where they are or when they’ve arrived.

Internet Commerce Delivery Point
Citibox locations are preferred delivery sites for courier companies and the postal service as they are chosen for their ease of access and their parking and the carrier can deliver several parcels together at one location. Citibox will contact you when a parcel arrives so you know when to come and collect.
