Citibox launches new Bottle Pack for Courier from Spain this Christmas.

Saturday, October 30th, 2010

I always urge my wife to buy next year’s Christmas presents in this year’s January sales.  It never works, come January we are shopped out and broke so, good idea that it is, we are looking at Christmas coming up and gifts to find in Spain.

Always appreciated back in the UK are Fine Spanish Products so this year we will be sending many people a bottle of Extra Virgin Olive Oil, a bottle of Cava and a bottle of our locally made Wine from the Contraviesa.  The olive oil we buy in 5 litre containers from our local barand it really is the best we’ve ever tasted, the beautiful bottles come from a wine shop in the Alpujarras.

Maybe we will vary this with some Vinagre de Jerez, a bottle of Manzanilla and one of the Vino Dulce de Málaga which tastes just like Christmas Pudding to me.  Then again, a fine Brandy de Jerez, some Pacharán made from Sloes and bottle of my home-made Apricot Brandy might go down well (every summer the neighbour turns up with an entire case of Apricots and we have to do something with them before they go off).

Bottle Pack suitable for courier from Spain

Cut-away of Bottle Pack

How are we going to get them back to the UK unbroken?  Well, this year Citibox are giving away a three bottle gift pack to anyone who wants to FedEx bottles as Christmas presents.  The Packs are rated for a drop height of 1.2m and meet FedEx’ specifications for safe delivery.  They have adjustable bases to accommodate bottles of different heights.  There’s even room to slip a salchicón or chorizo  or some turón, a tub of home-baked almonds or some fig chutney in with the bottles.  UK Customs will allow up to six bottles of wine without duty as a Seasonal Gift.  We have not had any problems elsewhere within the EU.  For the USA and Canada, the declared value must be under €25 to avoid the FDA getting involved.

And they’re FREE.  They would cost you €7.50 each if you bought them but Citibox will give you free packaging when you send bottles via FedEx Courier this Christmas through a participating Citibox office (although we can’t combine this with any other offer).  And remember that FedEx is cheaper than posting your parcels, 3 bottles start from €32.50 and 6 bottles from only €41.00!

They will be arriving in stores from this week.  That’s Christmas Spirit the Citibox way!

What are people buying in the UK for Courier Shipment to Spain?

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

As those Spanish residents who have their income in £s rather than Euros are well aware, the Pound has fallen appreciably against the Euro recently.  But whatever currency your income is in, the arguments for buying from the UK still stack up.  If you have Euros then they go further in the UK, if you have  £s you don’t want to exchange them at this rate.

So, what are we buying?  (There is also a good reason, if buying from outside the EU, to take delivery in the UK before bringing your goods to Spain.)

Spare Parts for Cars.  In Spain, cars are valuable and labour is considerably cheaper than in the UK.  This makes spares expensive in Spain (where they keep their cars going for ever) and cheap in the UK (where they throw it away when it breaks).  For goodness sake check the price on eBay.

Jewelery.  OK, this is from China not from the UK but we recently bought some really lovely pearls and had them sent to the UK for stringing.  Silver Nutmeg do a wonderful job at re-stringing pearls for around 40% of the price we were quoted in Spain and in the UK High St.  The pearls from eBay were around 33% of the price in the High St in either country.  IVA would have been payable if they had been sent direct to Spain.

IT products.  Again these come from China and are bought from eBay.  Really, you can’t imagine how cheap these items are (cordless mouse, €3, to replace the one that didn’t work from Carrefour, €18).  The quality is excellent and there are no import duties which there would be if they came direct into Spain, they were sent to the UK.

Brochures and printing.  KallKwik in Horsham print 5,000 two sided A5 leaflets for £210, say €240.  The last ones I had printed in Spain cost over €100 more.

Seeds and vegetables.  Can you find rhubarb in Spain?  Horseradish?  In our local garden centre you have a choice between Red and White seed potatoes in the UK you have many tens of different varieties.  The nub is that they will not send outside the UK so you have to use our  UK Address in Spain .

Shoes.  My wife takes a size 42, most Spanish shops only stock up to a size 41.  I’m not saying that they are cheaper but this is more of a necessity.

Homeopathic and vitamin supplements.  These are tightly controlled in Spain (so may be stopped on import from outside the EU) but not so in the UK, you can import to the UK from the USA for around 40% of the price you need to pay in Spain.  Even the UK doctors recommend glucosamine for stiff joints.

Printer toner and ink.  A no-brainer, I can’t even find replacement colour cartridges for my laser printer in the shop I bought it from so why not save 50% and get them from eBay?  Inkjet cartridges – madness what they cost in Spain.

Christmas presents.  Yes, the season is well under way.  Again, I’m not saying that you can’t grab a bargain in Spain but with the internet you have the whole world to examine for the lowest prices.  What about the other parts of Christmas – seen crackers for sale?  Mince pies?  Probably in your local English Shop but why not explore a large order from Asda and save money?  Where are you getting your Cheddar or Stilton – will it be the best quality?

That’s what we’re buying – what are you buying?

Suitcases, send them by courier from Spain. Why?

Saturday, October 16th, 2010

Our head office is in Marbella and there is naturally quite a lot of money around in Marbella.  So it’s not surprising that Marbella residents send their suitcases by FedEx and travel with hand luggage only.

But, does that mean that it costs a fortune to send your suitcase from Spain on ahead of you?  No, and here is why.

I’ve told you all before about the cost of excess baggage, typically €15/kg against a cost of around €3/kg to FedEx your luggage through Citibox.  You all understand the strain of waiting around at the luggage carousel in airports, getting to the car hire queue last and waiting for an hour to pick up your keys, the lack of trolleys to carry your bags and the general frustration that goes with accompanied luggage.

What’s the alternative?  Well, I’ve just had a look at Iberia’s website.  Your luggage allowance (outside of business class) is 23kg with the following exceptions:

(1) To/From Brazil, 2 pieces are permitted for all economy classes. The authorised weight per bag is 32 kg instead of 23 kg, a benefit which is applicable on the return journey as well as the outbound.
(2)A free baggage allowance for 3 standard items in Business and 2 standard items in tourist applies to/from Equatorial Guinea (application period for tourist class: from 16/01 to 15/06 and from 21/09 to 20/11). A free baggage allowance for 2 standard items in tourist applies to/from Nigeria and Senegal.
(3) Standard item: maximum size and weight 158 cm and 23 kg.

OK, so that’s simple enough, I’ll remember that when I go to Senegal.

A few years ago we bought a monster suitcase, even in the sale it cost €135 and it has all the bells and whistles that you could want. Sadly, it weighs 7kg on its own and that’s not smart when Ryanair give you a 15kg baggage allowance so it remains in the attic.

Nowadays, we FedEx all our luggage from Spain.  British Airways recommend a “partner” company called First Luggage to their customers.  I’m sure they’re a perfectly good company, they just charge 50% more than Citibox for baggage from Spain.  Why don’t you investigate the practicalities of shipping your suitcases by courier?

Goods Lost in Transit by Initial City Link, TNT and UPS – Good reasons to send your valuables to & from Spain with FedEx!

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

Today is a holiday in Spain and I’m meant to be doing accounts work.  But I can’t help looking at what the competition is doing and, blow me over, I´ve found a corker of a website!

http://www.goodreason.co.uk/department/tnt-lost-parcels-packages/ .

If you don´t want to read the whole thing, here is a summary.  This website sells goods “lost” in Transit by Initial City Link, TNT and UPS.  When these companies later “find” your package they auction off the contents.  Unbelievably, in the case of TNT, some of these parcels contain the information about the original owner!

The site goes on to say that if you accept compensation from the courier company the goods belong legally to that courier company and it has every right to sell them.

“The Dilithium Networks Analyzer for example had Dilithium Networks badges on it. All UPS had to do was look the customer on their database. UPS gave £25 GBP to Dilithium Networks who valued the item at £12,000 GBP at the time. We have all the details.

Also, the problem with auction houses is knowing that if UPS lost your parcel, it could end up in the public domain and it may include sensitive information too.”

This company buys “lost” courier parcels at auction and then sells them on.  The above analyser is on sale for  £4,000.  Their current stock includes parts for an attack submarine for sale at a bargain £10,000 + VAT!

No wonder Citibox uses FedEx Express for virtually all its international deliveries.  If you want to use FedEx too, and save money, you had better come through Citibox.

How the Puente affects the Spanish Courier Services

Monday, October 11th, 2010

Spain is the party country.  Although, amazingly, there are not that many more public holidays in Spain than in the UK, what is so disruptive is:

Fiestas disrupt Spain's Courier Services

Typical Spanish Fiesta Participents

a)  Different regions and towns have different holidays so you never quite know when Marbella is feasting its local saint (or patrona).

b)  The Puente.  A puente is a bridge.  If a public holiday is on a Tuesday or Thursday, a huge number of people in Spain take the Monday or Friday as leave (or sick-leave).  If the public holiday is on a Wednesday it becomes a “Puente largo” or Long bridge and results in two days one one side or another being taken off work.

The result is to put Spain on slow boil while the holiday (and subsequent hangover day) is taken away from the normal working week.  This means that someone who was going to send something urgent last Friday but didn’t quite make it will now have to wait until next Wednesday when they are next in the office.

It is not FedEx that take the Puente, they work a normal schedule, but the other inefficient couriers who have franchise systems and, to be fair, the customers themselves.  I am thrilled to say that no Citibox office took a puente!

With FedEx Economy that makes a whole week difference in arrival date (because FedEx parcels travel over the weekend).

Unreliability – The very last thing you need from your Spanish Courier Service

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

Those of you that read this blog or visit our website regularly will notice that we are having a facelift and the website is now cleaner and more efficient to use.  Our designer Richard at mods-net.com has done a fantastic job at his usual low, low price.

What is one of the principal visual changes?  We have dropped the UK Mail service from the front page.  Why?  It doesn’t work!

Citibox is a company that is big in reach but small in head-office staff.  If something goes wrong with one of our customers’ packages, we are on the case immediately and don’t let go until we have resolved the problem to the customer’s satisfaction.  This can mean hours at a time on the telephone to everyone from FedEx senior management to call centres in India and local offices in any country you care to mention.

Wazir, the Company Terrier

Got a problem with customs in Kazakhstan?  Citibox is going to solve it for you.

Left your wallet in the hire car and don’t speak Spanish?  Citibox is going to solve it for you.

Need a visa for Afghanistan?  Citibox is going to solve it for you.

These are all items that we have solved for customers over the past week.  We cling like a terrier to the problem until we have solved it to your satisfaction.

Citibox is a service business, our customers return for only one reason: they think that our service /price ratio is the optimum they can get when sending packages from Spain.  Although we are the cheapest Courier from Spain available over the internet we have to ruthlessly cut out any inefficiency.

That means that we will not deal with any company that lets us down.  We don’t chase profit margins at the expense of service quality.  We don’t cut corners.  We no longer deal with the IMX postal system nor the ASM Spanish Internal Courier system.

Apart from any other reason, we just hate to waste time dealing with problems which is why we use FedEx for our international courier deliveries.

Hopefully you, our customers, share our philosophy.  If it’s worth sending, send it by Citibox.
