Why ExPats in Spain need Citibox UK Address with automatic Courier to Spain to keep their UK Finances and Bank Accounts Straight

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

OK, this one’s a cheat because it´s not my blog but a reader brought it to my attention.  Thanks to Hannah Beecham who’s excellent article can be seen here Expat Money Channel .

The lead-in goes like this.  “British expatriates are finding themselves left out in the cold when it comes to opening or retaining a UK bank account. Despite the fact many Brits leave the country for work with every intention of returning back home at some point, the Know Your Customer (KYC) anti-money laundering regulations are leaving expats baffled and frustrated when it comes to establishing their rights to a UK bank account.”

Like many people here in Spain we maintain our links with our UK Bank and we have all our bank statements and mail addressed to our address at Citibox, 20 Bond Street, B70 7DQ, our UK Address in Spain. For more information see here Citibox UK Address for those living in Spain .

Citibox helps your expat finances

We certainly don't want to lose our UK bank account

“While the confusion on the rights to a UK bank account has been an issue for some time, matters have become much more urgent following the recent global financial crisis, which has left hundreds of thousands of Brits feeling insecure about their banking arrangements.”

I would say “Why risk it?”  For what is really a very small sum of money a year you can retain a UK address and have all your mail forwarded to your local Citibox outlet by Courier to Spain every week.

Citibox’s service costs only €100 a year and for that you get your own unique personalised UK Address with all your mail sent by FedEx to Spain every week and couriered to your local office.  All for less than €2 a week!  You have been warned!

Why do I use eBay in the UK to buy goods and then Courier them to Spain?

Courier to Spain from eBay UK

This is what we needed

Well, for a start, have you seen the Spanish eBay site?  It’s so bad that you can’t actually find much listed that you want and when you do you find something that might interest you you learn that they don’t take PayPal or they won’t post it and insist on meeting you to hand over the article for cash.

I was looking for a shower head.  The water pressure is so bad where we live that we get alternate droughts of no water and then gluts where the water comes back accompanied by large amounts of air which, literally, have blown the shower head to pieces.  (We have now fixed this with a deposito and a pressure pump).

Delivered by FedEx Courier UK to Spain

This is what we bought eBay UK

Now I’m sure the local ferretería (ironmonger, for those old enough to remember what that was) or even one of the large international chains of bricolage (DIY superstores) will have the sort of hand-held shower head that you use on the end of a tube in the bath but I wanted to replace the one that was 8” (20cm) in diameter and comes directly down from the ceiling or on a chrome arm that sticks out from the wall.  I really don’t think the local shops would even understand what I was asking for let alone be able to provide it (we are in remotest Andalucía).  On Spanish eBay there are a number of cheap hand-held shower heads with multi coloured LEDs (really naff) and some huge and expensive ones also with LEDs.  There is also one that fits the bill but it is from China and the swift posting of it costs between €25 and €40 alone so it is a no-go, more than the entire price of buying it, postage and delivery to Spain from the UK.

So I went onto eBay.co.uk and found every sort of shower head I could possibly desire.  Quickly I bought one for less than €20 including delivery to the UK and will receive it next week (free posting within the UK) at a cost of €5 for the FedEx Courier transport to Spain (which I won’t pay because I’m the boss).  The downside of this arrangement is that I got a little carried away.  True I bought a laser printer cartridge for a Samsung CLP315 colour printer that I cannot find in Spain (and at much lower cost than the PC City that closed) but then I got seduced by a computer supplies place from Hong Kong and spent loads on useless gadgets like an LED light working from my USB port, laptop cooling fans etc.

Who else uses Citibox for eBay purchases?  Well, we have many Spanish customers who want to buy in the UK but the vendor will not send abroad so they use Citibox’s UK address and, even if they can’t collect from a Citibox office, we courier to them once the object has arrived in Spain.  And this week we have had a first, a UK customer who wanted to buy from eBay Spain but could not persuade the vendor to ship out of Spain so the delivery was made to our Javea office and is being sent on through IMX Royal Mail to the customer in the UK.

Mail or parcel fulfilment is the technical term for this.  What is the point of buying something if you cannot get possession? Citibox allows people to realise their purchases and obtain the physical goods promptly, reliably and insured, rather than the promise of the internet purchase and, as such, Citibox are a vital link in the internet supply chain.

Air Traffic Controllers’ strikes have knock-on effect on Courier from Spain

Monday, July 26th, 2010

French air traffic controllers went on strike last week from Tuesday to Thursday drastically cutting flights to and from Paris which is the hub of FedEx European Operations.  The sickness rate among air traffic controllers in Barcelona, Spain has reached around 1/3rd of all staff which has been described as a “wild-cat” or unofficial strike.  The Spanish government are threatening to let the military take control of some parts of the airspace.  Needless to say, this has severely interrupted some shipments.

Paris is the FedEx European hub

The French strike is over the plans to create a Single European Sky (SES) which is the unification of European Airspace.   The Spanish “protest” is over a government attempt to put an end to their very high rates of pay.

Of course, it is not just courier parcel services and urgent letters from banks and insurance companies to their UK head offices or worldwide that are hit by the strikes.  Passengers are affected not only by the air traffice controllers but also by yet another threat of strike action from British Airways cabin crew over reduced staffing levels.

Meanwhile, Lufthansa, the busiest airline within Europe, have narrowly avoided a prolonged pilots strike and there are rumours of strikes in Greece affecting air traffic there.

Clearly, these strikes and other actions are aimed at threatening the employers at the busiest time of the summer holiday season and I don´t think the knock-on effect to international courier services is even considered.  I do hope any of you travelling abroad this summer do not get inconvenienced by the delays that have affected our clients sending international parcels from Spain.

As all of you who live in Spain know, the temperature is still rising and, in Andalucia anyway, the holiday season is building up to the month of  August when the entire province will stop work.  Citibox’s cheap discount courier services from Spain start to be used by tourists forgetting their mobile phones or computers and sending their luggage rather than paying excess baggage charges.  Why not enjoy the “silly season” by having a smile over these FedEx posters.

Timeshare Resale Scams – the Companies Exposed using our UK Address in Spain

Sunday, July 11th, 2010

Last week I promised Fraud using UK Address in Spain that, unless I received a suitable explanation of what was actually happening, I would name and shame the companies that have been using the Citibox UK Address with courier service to Spain as a front for a scheme that seems to have left many people out of pocket.

They are apparantly persuading people to part with sums well over £1,000 a time after which the poor victims never hear another word. The scam is connected with the resale of timeshare.  If you are thinking of selling your timeshare or buying a “cheap” previously owned timeshare in Spain, please be very very careful.  All post to our UK Address for either of these companies is now being collected by Smethwick (West Midlands) Fraud Office where a couple of detectives are assigned to the case.

This company was using Citibox´s UK Address in Spain

Be careful of buying or selling your timeshare through this company

And if that is not enough for you, the same people were suspended from another mail-forwarding service a couple of months back but this time using a different company.

And don´t buy or sell timeshare through this one either.

Anyone who has any information on these companies or the people behind them can pass it onto us and we will forward it to the detectives investigating in the UK.

Be very careful of Fraud when dealing with “Friendly” Spanish companies

Sunday, July 4th, 2010

Citibox accept mail at their UK Address and Courier it weekly to Spain via FedEx.  Oh dear.  On Friday I got a telephone call from a British Police Detective asking about one of our customers using our UK Address in Spain.  Only the previous day, a gentleman had travelled 200 miles or so from Cumbria to Birmingham to ask for his money back.  The Detective had been called in by a lady who had suffered similar loss.  All the post going to that particular Citibox holder is being forwarded to the UK CID …. BUT, let me please leave this message for anyone who wishes to learn the lesson.

Citibox UK Address for Courier delivery to SpainThere are unscrupulous companies and individuals working from Spain and they may be using the UK Address of either Citibox or even one of our competitors.  At the time that they sign up with us, we have no idea whether a customer is honest or not so we take every possible precaution in case they are the latter.  I have today sent the passport copies of one of our box holders to the West Midlands police force who are impounding, for the time being, any mail sent to Bond St. for the name of that particular customer (don´t worry, everyone else’s mail will come through as usual!).   I have also found out that this particular company has another trading name with another UK accommodation address in Spain and I have informed the operators of that address.

We are told that this company is taking money from individuals in the UK and promising in return to sell their timeshare in Spain or something similar.  After parting with the cash, the individuals never hear again from the company.  We are told that it is around €1,500 a time or more.

Now, this may or may not be true.  But Citibox does not want to be associated in any way with any form of fraudulent activity so we are asking you, the public, to alert us as soon as possible to any suspicions you may have and we will do our utmost, together with the relevant authorities in Spain and the UK to stamp out any illegal activity.

If there is a perfectly good explanation forthcoming from our customer, I will publish it on this blog.  If there is not, I will name and shame.  However, please all be aware of the following:

Except for Turners of Bond Street, run by my brother in law, Peter Turner,  who produces the best smoked and green bacon in the Midlands, all deliveries to a box number or to “Banus 732″ are merely being re-routed to a Citibox account in Spain.  This is, if you like, a virtual address in the UK from which, once a week, all the mail is sent down to Spain by FedEx.  There is another address which has a similar method of diverting mail to Spain and that is a PO Box 348 at Gatwick Airport which is nothing to do with Citibox but operated by a rival organisation.

I do ask everyone to use caution when dealing with companies and individuals based in Spain that fail to give out a physical location in Spain and only use virtual office addresses in the UK.  Citibox only use actual addresses where people can visit us.

I will keep you all updated with the response of the particular company concerned.  There are many honest accountants, financial advisers and lawyers to whom Citibox would be delighted to recommend you but we don´t take advertising on our web site and we will only recommend from personal experience.  Drop us an email.
